Raid the Stash Block #2
Dutch Puzzle

Here is the second block design for the "Raid the Stash" quilt along. Instructions make one 6" block.

This is a Dutch Puzzle, or is sometimes called a Windmill. If you do a whole quilt using just this block it would be great to plan the colours so that the corner flying geese join together to make whole windmills as well (different colours in each corner that match other blocks and join seamlessly). But since we're just doing a few blocks I've used two colours per block.

Select 2 fabrics + your base for each block.
Cut 4 : 3.5"x2" from fabric 1
Cut 4 : 3.5"x2" from fabric 2
Cut 16 : 2" squares from your base fabric

Draw a diagonal line on every square, then line up the square on the edge of one coloured rectangle and sew along the line. clip and iron flat. Repeat for the remaining rectangles, then do the same for the other side to create your triangles.

Lay out your block as pictured with one fabric on the inside and another on the outside. Join together 2 triangles of different colours and press seams to one side. Now you have 4 blocks. Join them together into two strips (press), and join the strips together to finish your block.

Press well, but be careful not to burn or over iron the fabric. I also clipped the corners to help a couple of the bulky seams lie as flat as possible. All those small squares make this a slower block to make. I recommend making one to make sure you have all your measurements and methods right, then cut all the pieces for three more and make them together to speed up the process.

Repeat to make 4 blocks with different fabrics.
